Obituary

Rose Gualtieri Slaga

Norwich – Rose Gualtieri Slaga, 97, passed away on June 29th, 2023, in her home with her loving and care giving daughter Gina at her bedside.

She was born September 5, 1925 in Bush, IL, the daughter of the late Pietro and Gina (Orlandini) Gualtieri.

Rose lived almost all of her life in Norwich, CT. She moved to CT after the closing of the coal mines in 1935, to include World War II.

She graduated from Elizabeth St. School in 1939 and Norwich Free Academy in 1943. Rose was part of the N.F.A. N. club, secretary of the class of ’43 reunions, all while working fulltime at the Lincoln store. She was awarded the victory award certificate from the U.S. Treasury for her outstanding support of bond sales on November 29, 1945 by secretary Fred M. Vinsanj. In 1979 she became a charter member of Norwich Lioness Club, Norwich D.A.V. chapter Ten Auxiliary and Italian Women’s Social Club. She also sang songs around the age of 3 and up at Panama Theater Minstrela in Norwich. She belonged to the senior bowling league and Divine Providence Church. She always included her children on vacation time and assisted her husband in his hobby of printing.

There was one very important thing that Rose loved to accomplish, always working in her beautiful yard. She cherished family get togethers on special occasions and her belief was “live from the heart.”

After the war, she married the love of her life, Frank Slaga on February 12th, 1949, at St. Patrick’s Church after he returned from Army service.

She was predeceased by her husband Frank Slaga, brother Albert Gualtieri, his wife Lucy Gualtieri, and son-in-law Randy Shallcross.

Rose is survived by her loving daughter Gina Shallcross of Niantic, CT, two sons Frank Slaga Jr. of Bellevue, WA, John and Jean Slaga of Palm Coast, FL, two grandchildren Jasmine Slaga of Palm Coast, FL, Jeremy and Megan Slaga along with great-grandson Harrison James Slaga of Philadelphia, PA.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Dennis Slater, Dr. Jeffrey Seltzer, and Dr. Paul Deutsch for their wonderful guidance.

There will be a private burial for Rose Slaga and Randy Shallcross in Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich.
