Mary Smith Obituary

Windham - Mary T. Smith, 94, a longtime resident of Fitchville (Bozrah), passed away peacefully on January 18, 2021.

She was born in New London, lived in Ledyard and Fitchville, the eldest of four children of the late Antone and Anna Goulart. She was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy and was married to Edward E. Smith for 58 wonderful years until his death in 2011.  Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, neighbor, and friend to many.  She was an active member of the Bozrah and Franklin Senior Centers; loved Bozrah Farmer’s Markets, bingo, gardening, knitting/crocheting, puzzles, tracking the weather, baking, and making traditional Portuguese foods. Mary was someone you could always count on for her cookies and pumpkin bread at community bake sales.  You were really special to Mary if she made you her famous knitted potholders, beer bread, or one of her apple or butternut squash pies. She remembered important dates and wrote thoughtful letters/cards to loved ones.  She was a communicant at St. John's Church, Fitchville.

She is survived by her loving children: Marie, Richard (Joyce), Linda (Bob), Catherine (Michael), and Michael, as well as her devoted brother Arthur Goulart. Her grandchildren (Richard Jr. and Matthew; Matthew and Michele; Jennifer, Gina, and Brian; Victoria and Ben, and great-grandson, Dexter, will all miss their Gram. Her nieces and nephews (Bonnie, Art, Tony, and Patty) were very special to her, along with several Bozrah neighbors, her good friend Barbara Ewen, cherished senior center friends, and her fellow residents at St. Joseph’s Living Center.  She was predeceased by her husband and parents, a daughter Lucille, her siblings (Emilie and Antone), along with other family members.

In lieu of flowers, Mary would prefer donations be made in her memory to St. Joseph’s Living Center, 14 Club Road, Windham, CT 06280; Bozrah Farmer’s Market – Bozrah Town Hall, 1 River Road, Bozrah, CT 06334; or any charity of the donor's choice. The family expresses their sincerest thanks to staff members at St. Joseph’s Living Center for their compassion and care in her final years.

In these Covid pandemic times, funeral services will be private.
