Mary Shugrue Obituary

Mary T. Shugrue (1926-2019)

Heaven is a little more blessed with the addition of Mary Shugrue to its ranks. Mary T. Shugrue, 93, of Cincinnati, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 25, 2019.

Mary was born and raised in Norwich, the daughter of the late Patrick and Annie (Shea) Mumford. She graduated from Willimantic State Teachers College and the University of Connecticut and taught, before her marriage to Norwich-native Joe Shugrue, at Norwich Free Academy. She was extremely intelligent, academically and practically, and a faithful servant to God, full of kindness and generosity. To her children, Mary was both the strongest and gentlest person they have ever known and a true example of how to live. She had the patience of a saint, raising six children (and a strong-willed husband) without so much as raising her voice to any of them. She had the heart of a lion, fearlessly loving her family and making whatever sacrifices were necessary to protect and provide for them. She was their rock, always there when they needed her. There were other things she loved as well - her dogs, roses, reading, Irish music, volunteering at the library, coffee ice cream and a strong Manhattan on the rocks - but it was her family that was always her first priority.

Mary is survived by her children, Catherine (Daniel) Habes, Paul (Fenton) Shugrue, Clare (Christopher) Rupp, Marian Shugrue and Laura Shugrue. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Daniel and Joseph (Dominique) Habes, Cassidy (Matt) Meiners, Kelsey (Jordan) Bloom, and Joseph and Michael Shugrue, as well as her beloved great-granddaughter Madeline, two more great-grandchildren on the way, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph N. Shugrue and her son John Shugrue. She will be missed, but there is comfort in knowing that she is reunited with Joe, John and all the others she has loved and lost.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Norwich, CT, on Friday, October 25 at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shugrue Memorial Scholarship Fund at Northwest Catholic High School, 29 Wampanoag Drive, West Hartford, CT 06117.
