George F. Andrews

George F. Andrews Sr, died peacefully on August 22, 2019, his 91st birthday, at Backus Hospital in Norwich. George was born on August 22, 1928 to Joseph and Mary (Lema) Andrews in East Providence, RI. After finishing high school, George enlisted for 3 years in the Army in 1946 and served in the Philippines and volunteered for the Graves Registration Unit for the repatriation of WWII dead in New Guinea. Following his discharge, he joined the RI National Guard and was recalled to active duty in July 1950-1952 as a First Sergeant. He served 6 months in Germany. Upon discharge, he joined the US Army Reserves. Commissioned as a 2nd LT in 1953 and retired in 1968 as a Major.

In 1956, he married Carolyn McDole of Pawtucket, RI. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on August 25. George was a dedicated husband, visiting Carolyn daily in her nursing home, until he was unable to so.

He was a lector and Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart Church in Norwichtown and at St. Teresa in Naples, FL. George served as a corporator for Chelsea Savings Bank, and on the Board of Education in Norwich. He was a member of Pautipaug Country Club for 43 years. He was also Past Treasurer of BPOE 430 in Norwich. George was the Past Grand Knight of White Cross Council 13 and a member of the Fourth Degree Honor Guard. George retired as a claims manager for the Hartford region for Liberty Mutual Insurance. He is predeceased by his three older brothers, James, Albert and Joseph and sister Florence McWeeney.

George is survived by his beloved wife Carolyn, daughter Kelly Andrews-Babcock and husband Ted and their children Aubrey and Fletcher of Killingly, CT. His son George F. Andrews Jr and wife Carol and their children George III and Cara of Terryville, CT. He also leaves his nephew William McWeeney of Amarillo, Texas.

Calling hours will be Wednesday August 28, 2019 from 5 to 7 PM at the Cummings-Gagne Funeral Home 82 Cliff St Norwich, CT.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday August 29, 2019 at 10 AM at Sacred Heart Church Norwichtown 52 West Town St., Norwich, CT followed by burial at Maplewood Cemetery.
