Marion "Sis" (Larsen) O'Neil

MARION “SIS” O’NEIL Bozrah - surrounded by family at the Middlesex Hospital; Marion, “Sis” O’Neil, 85, died on June 4, 2018.

She was born Sept. 26, 1932 in Norwich, CT. Sis, daughter of Marion Larson and Witter O’Neil (deceased) is survived by her three siblings, Barbara, Tommy and Skip and their spouses. Older sister Patty, is pre-deceased, 1995.

In addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins, Sis’s extended family includes: Snuffy, her true companion and the Acorn Acres Camp Mascot. Many camping friends and her incredible loyal staff and devoted families and friends have found their way to her campground. This year, Acorn Acres Campground celebrates its “50th” anniversary, 1968-2018.

Sis attended NFA and was a member of the graduating Class of 1950. Sis loved the academic world and had many interests in school; two favorites were the French Club and Chorus. Sis was a Physical Education teacher at Notre Dame and Kelly Junior High in Norwich. She was an instrumental part of the NFA Alumni Association, organizing and hosting annual events.

In the early 50’s, Sis coached a girl’s basketball team called “The Flashers.” Sis was a great lover of sports and games and expressed an enthusiastic sense of fair play and competition. She remained an ever faithful fan of the Uconn Huskies and the Connecticut Sun.

For fifty years, it has been non-stop entertainment with a daily list of activities that Sis would encourage the campers to participate in, especially the kids. But cell phones and electronics eventually took the place of that as well as hanging out in the rec hall together playing the juke box and shooting pool.

How she missed the kids and interacting with them, coaching them, listening to their dreams and encouraging them. Just “go for it” Sis would say.

As we echo her own parting words, “SEE- YA” to this incredible woman, Acorn Acres will forever live on in our childhood memories, in the daily laughter and songs among dear friends, and in the love that keeps the campfire of our hearts aglow.

A mass of Christian burial will be on Friday, June 8th at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church on 181 Elizabeth St., Norwich, Ct. with the burial to follow at St. Joseph’s cemetery, 815 Boswell Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to hospice.
