Marie Ann Piela

Marie Ann Piela Preston, CT - Marie Ann Piela, 74, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She courageously fought cancer for the past five years and is now at peace. She was born in Norwich on May 9, 1937 to the late Peter and Anna (Brogno) Barber. Marie was united in marriage with her beloved husband Joseph R. Piela on September 15, 1956 at St. Mary's Church in Norwich. Mr. Piela survives his wife of 55 years. Mrs. Piela worked for many years as the treasurer of Piela Electric in Preston. She had a loving soul and cared for her whole family. Most important to Marie was her family and loved going on lunch dates and doing special things for others. She had a contagious smile and loved life. Marie was affectionately known to most as "Nonnie". In addition to her husband, she leaves behind her son Joseph W. Piela and his wife Mary Jo Tryba of Mansfield, a daughter Katherine Piela of Norwich, six grandchildren; Rayleene Seyb and her husband John of Maine, Christopher Piela of Griswold, Megan Piela and her companion Andrew Sharron of Bozrah, Alex Majewski of Ashaway, RI; Rebecca Boenig and her husband Kevin of Preston, and Jamie Turner and her husband Austin of Preston. She also had six great grandchildren that she loved dearly; Cadence Piela, Emma Piela, Madeline Seyb, Ava Marie Boenig, Kevin "Vinnie" Boenig, Jr. and Chloe Turner. Marie is also survived by her sister Gloria Barber of Preston. She is predeceased by two children, Joanne M Piela Morse in 2008 and Thomas M. Piela in 2011 and a brother Peter D. Barber in 1983. The family would like to say a special thanks to the following people who cared for Marie with compassion: Dr. Bulgaru and the ECHO staff, the Nurses and Pct's on A2, Nicole Abate and Kim Mauro from Backus Home Healthcare, Jessica and Sylvia from Hospice of SE CT and a dear friend Sherry Guertin. An 11AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012 at St. Joseph Church in Norwich, Burial will follow in the family plot at Poquetanuck Cemetery in Preston, CT.
