M. Virginia Leary

Virginia Leary Norwich - Virginia Leary, born Mary Virginia Leary, of Woodland Drive, Norwich, Connecticut passed away peacefully at her home on May 14, 2012. Virginia was born in Norwich, Connecticut on October 14, 1921 was the daughter of the late Mary McCarthy Leary and Cornelius Leary. She graduated from Norwich Free Academy and, then, Connecticut College in New London in 1943. Virginia had a long and successful career as an English teacher and guidance counselor at Norwich Free Academy. She also took care of her mother and brother, John, in their final illness. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling at home and abroad and especially enjoyed a trip to her parent's homeland, Ireland, with her father shortly before his death. She also enjoyed lunches and social gatherings with her friends. Virginia was a loving and generous aunt who always remembered her family at birthdays, Christmas and other important occasions. She is survived by her nephew, Philip Leary and his wife, Margaret, of Montville, Connecticut, nephew, Donald Leary and his wife, Melody, of Norwich, Connecticut and their daughter, Melanie, niece, Charlene Leary Brummett and her husband, Randy, of Walnut Creek, California and their daughter, Jenna and son, Jeff and niece, Jane Leary Shipman and her husband, Richard, of Kensington, Connecticut and their daughter, Traci, and son, Brian. She was predeceased by her older brothers, Cornelius, Humphrey, Daniel, and John. The family would like to thank Hospice and, Sharon, who was her home companion for over a year, for their kindness and help during her final illness. The funeral will assemble on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at the Cummings - Gagne Funeral, Norwich, CT at 9AM and proceed to a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Cathedral, 213 Broadway, Norwich, CT. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich, CT. Donations may be made in Virginia's memory to Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St. Norwich, CT 06360.
